inkavik

A slow journey to the rhythm of water and light, an encounter with a territory and its inhabitants.

Iceland, a notebook, a slow, drawn adventure - what if you were part of it?

Join the adventure on Ulule and receive the booklet, prints and more.

In July 2025, we set off to explore Iceland without a plane, aboard a small 4×4, to create a travel diary illustrated on the spot - watercolors, stories, portraits. A slow-moving adventure, at human level, in the most remote corners of the North. With your support on Ulule, this journey will become a book, exhibitions and shared moments.

The concept

Inkavik is an artistic travel journal project to be carried out in Iceland during the summer of 2025. For one month, an illustrator will create watercolors inspired by the island's wild landscapes.

The project is intended to be slow, immersive and respectful. The aim is to document Iceland in a different way: away from the tourist sites, by going to meet the most remote places, in particular the Hornstrandir region, accessible only on foot or by boat.

A travel diary will be published at the end of the project, in printed form, accompanied by an exhibition and online sharing.

The team

  • Gabrielle is an illustrator specializing in travel journals. She has published several books, regularly exhibits her work and has created notebooks in Thailand, Cyprus, Germany, France, Switzerland and the UK. Her work is available here: Gabrielle Cornuault

  • Balthazar is passionate about the Nordic territories, with several trips to Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the Faroe Islands. An experienced traveler, he has explored all five continents and lived in the Caribbean, the USA and Argentina. He has already completed a similar trip in 2016

The trip

Dates : July 30 to August 30, 2025

Transport : By car from Geneva to Lörrach (Germany), then car train to Hamburg. From there, drive to Hirtshals in Denmark (with the possibility of a stopover in Copenhagen or in a remarkable natural area en route). Next, Smyril Line ferry from Hirtshals to Tórshavn (Faroe Islands), with a three-day stopover. Finally, the second leg of the ferry to Seyðisfjörður on Iceland's east coast, the island's entry point.

Itinerary : The journey will begin with an immersion in the nature reserve of Hornstrandir, of August 11 to 18, one of the wildest and most isolated regions of Iceland. After this timeless interlude, the itinerary will continue to the south and east of the island, at a slow and attentive pace, until Seydisfjordur, where the return ferry is scheduled for August 28.

Philosophy

Slow travel, autonomy, immersion, slow and local creation. The pace of the trip will follow that of the watercolors, with a focus on meeting Icelanders and discovering their way of life, culture and heritage in remote areas.

We are fully aware of the environmental issues linked to mobility. The choice of a 4×4 vehicle (Suzuki Jimny, small size, low fuel consumption) was dictated by the need to access isolated areas, while respecting authorized trails. We opted for a non-plane itinerary, combining train and ferry, to keep our overall carbon impact to a minimum.

Why Inkavik?

Inkavik is an invitation to travel and create.

The word unites "ink"the ink of watercolors and notebooks, and "avika nod to the names of the northern lands.
It's here, between sea, mountains and silence, that our route is mapped out: an illustrated travel diary of images, encounters and exploration.

For a month, we'll be meeting people, mountains and silence.
Every page, every watercolor, every portrait collected will be a living trace of this slow immersion in the wildest Iceland.

Inkavik is the north in watercolors.
