Chance sometimes has a very special way of reaching out to us. While paying the garage bill, the accountant lets me in, almost as if it were a secret, that a German painter lives just a stone's throw away, who has lived in Iceland for decades and is married to a Swiss woman. Intrigued, I go find Gabrielle and go meet them.
This is how we meet Pétur & Marietta, an adopted Icelandic couple. Pétur arrived here nearly 60 years ago, driven by a passion for Icelandic horses. Marietta, too, was drawn to these robust and unique equines in an artistic context. Their shared history was formed around horses, but also art: Pétur taught for a long time at the Reykjavik Art School, and today continues to sketch everything that inspires him, including their 23 horses, which Marietta passionately raises.
The conversation flows, warm, and lively. Gabrielle, of course, can't resist: she takes out her pen and sketches them as they happen; the color will come later. Meanwhile, Pétur dedicates his latest book of watercolors to her. A brief but intense exchange, one of those encounters that leave an impression long after their duration. Too close to departure to dream of a prolonged moment spent with horses and painting, but strong enough to make you want to meet again, one day, in Iceland.
We then resume our journey, under a welcome clearing, and taste local beers to put our minds and our notebooks in order. These last few days have been full of emotions, sometimes frustrations, but finally seem to be shaping up under better auspices. There remains this hint of apprehension until Jimny is taken on the ferry with us...
