Departure from our rest area, heading for Ísafjörður. The road is long, but we had planned a few stops.
First stop: a hot spring I spotted in my notes... except it apparently no longer exists. We improvise and finally settle down near a small church for lunch in the sun.
Then, around a bend, a completely improbable stop: a wooden hut sheltering a pool of scalding water, at the side of the road. A quick bath, hair still steaming, and we're off again.
A little further on, there's a place close to my heart: a huge natural pool discovered by chance in 2008, lost at the end of the world. I hadn't found it in 2016, and seeing it again today brings back memories of a distant conversation... perhaps it was here that the Hornstrandir was first mentioned.
The final stretch to Ísafjörður, where a guesthouse awaits us. No tent to pitch tonight, no improvised breakfast tomorrow: just a real bed, a roof, and a little warmth before plunging into the unknown.
The bags are packed, heavy with food. Tomorrow, I'll wake up at dawn for an 8 a.m. departure. Seven or eight days off the grid, in a region where anything is possible. The excitement is mounting... and so is the apprehension. I must be unbearable, going through all the "what ifs" out loud over and over again.
Tomorrow is the big leap.
