Today is a “beautiful day” for the Faroes.
That is to say: no rain, but a gale-force wind, a grey sky pierced by a few solar apparitions, and a relative cold – which depends on:
• walking speed
• the number of layers
• wind force
• and a subtle combo between hunger and fatigue
🥾 Despite everything, the hike to Bøsdalafossur was well worth the detour.
A spectacular waterfall that flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean from Lake Sørvágsvatn, itself suspended above the sea—an optical illusion made famous by drone pilots.
The site attracts people, but this morning the atmosphere was peaceful.
🚶♂️🚶♀️ Then, second walk of the day to Trøllkonufingur, literally The Witch's Finger — a 313-meter rocky peak, which seems to pierce the sky from the south coast of the island of Vágar.
🧙♀️ Legend has it that a witch from Iceland wanted to take the Faroes to her country.
But as she approached the southern shores of Vágar, the sun rose, and the light turned her to stone.
She fell into the sea, but was so large that only the back of her head and her finger protruded from the water.
👉 The skull became Koltur Island, and the finger, Trøllkonufingur.
🧤 More recent anecdote: in 1844, a member of the Danish royal entourage is said to have engraved the finger.
Having reached the summit, he greeted Prince Frederik who was passing by in a boat...
Then realized he had left a glove at the top.
He tried to climb back up - too exhausted, he fell and died.
Only 11 people are known to have reached the summit, the last time being in 2016.
🛒 After this windy day, some shopping, then drive to Æðuvík for the night.
A magnificent view of the sea, but a windy night ahead, someone whispers in my earpiece.
🚢 Breaking news of the day: the ferry to Iceland is delayed.
Departure now scheduled for August 7 at 8 a.m., with check-in at 3:30 a.m.
⏳ The night will be short, and we lose another day in Iceland.
But that's also what traveling differently is: taking the risks with flexibility.
