Here we are, cozy in a café in Höfn, waiting for the specialist. A diagnosis, some treatment, and perhaps the promise to continue the journey. For the past few days, an ache has been taking hold. Without complaining, we gritted our teeth, but for the past two days it has become omnipresent. Tonight, there's no way to ignore it.
The day had started early, with a two-hour hike to Múlagljúfur, a spectacular canyon with cascading waterfalls surrounded by steep, moss-covered walls. The kind of place that seems unreal. But for us, it was. Rain. All. Over. The same as the day before, the kind that pierces everything and has a unique ability in Iceland to make us wetter than anywhere else. Even better prepared, our jackets didn't have time to dry, and the Gore-Tex officially filed for divorce.
The weather then put us back on the ropes: a cafeteria to wait, hoping for a clearing that never came. Resigned, we gave up on Diamond Beach, this black sand beach dotted with stranded icebergs, and Jökulsárlón, this glacial lagoon where the blue blocks of Vatnajökull drift. Not this time.
As consolation, we treated ourselves to a hot bath at the Hoffell hot tubs, located in a small hotel in the area. The steaming water in the middle of the windswept countryside was a real contrast to the day. Gabrielle took out her brushes and gouache, as always, to transform the grayness into color.
But deep down, there was this noise. The one we'd been trying to ignore for the past few days. The belt whistled more than three times, and now it's in trouble. Today's patient is the JimnyFaithful companion, but tonight he's the one with the doctor's appointment.
